Products for the Planet: Register for our Climate Change Hackathon!

This year, all eyes will turn to Scotland as Glasgow hosts the COP26 Climate Change Summit from the 1st-12th November.

The IPCC have declared a “code red” for Humanity, warning of increasingly extreme weather, and exceeding the target maximum 1.5 degree increase in global temperature increase within 10 years.

The organisers of COP26 have stated that public involvement, education and empowerment are central to the Climate Action process, and we agree. So while the World’s Leaders convene to discuss their ongoing commitments to urgent climate action, we wanted to find a way for ourselves and the community to take meaningful action alongside it.

Introducing, Products for the Planet - a hybrid hackathon, created to develop digital innovations that educate, empower and inspire public action against Climate Change.

Products for the Planet Climate Change Hackathon

We've teamed up with Hackathon and tech event experts Product Forge to co-host our very own hackathon, where participants will work together in cross-functional teams to develop innovative products that will educate and inspire public action against some of the planet's biggest challenges.

Entrepreneurial designers, developers, data analysts, marketers, sector experts and more will spend the weekend developing their ideas and building prototypes before presenting to fellow participants, mentors, guests and judges on Sunday evening.

This event will be hybrid, with teams formed of remote and in-venue participants. We will have all necessary measures in place to ensure a safe event for all.

Develop your career, gain new skills, network with professionals and meet talented people with a shared interest in fighting Climate Change!

Never been to a Hack before?
Don't worry, we've got you covered. We've answered a few questions below, but for a full FAQ, visit the registration website here.

What exactly is a Hackathon?

A hackathon is a collaborative event that brings people with all kinds of experience and skills together to create solutions or products to problems. Check out highlights from one of Product Forge's previous events below to give you a small taste.

Do I need to have coding/computer skills to take part?

Not at all! The key to a Hackathon is collaboration - we carefully form cross-functional teams based on their skillsets, so that each team has the expertise they need to develop some great ideas - and you get to meet and learn from other people!

Whether you are a designer, marketer, developer, data analyst, business expert or simply a climate change enthusiast bursting with ideas, everyone is welcome and everyone has a part to play.

How long will it last?

Hackathons can last any length of time really - with most lasting at least a full weekend. Due to certain limitations from Covid-19, our hackathon will be on the shorter side, running from Friday evening to Sunday evening. Participants will have access to the venue from early on Saturday morning and will be able to work into the small hours before returning the following morning. Participants will not be able to sleep over in the venue.

Friday 5th November: Short introduction session, online only
Saturday 6th November: Ideation sessions, mentor sessions and prototyping
Sunday 7th November: Practice presentations, team photos, final presentations and judging

How are the teams formed?

Again to save time and for Covid restrictions, we are going to be forming the teams prior to the event.
We will look at what skills and expertise each participant is bringing to the table, and form teams that have a variety of skillsets. We'll be arranging video calls to link up participants with each other where you can then get to know your new team mates!

Is there a winner?

Yes. Teams will present in front of a panel of judges (and everyone else), and a winner is chosen from each challenge category (three in total).

What's in it for me?

Hackathons are an excellent way to develop in your career, gain new skills, network with other companies, employers and peers and is generally great for personal development. Many teams at Hackathons end up developing their prototype further after the event, and some have even started new companies off the back of it!

If you’ve been to a hackathon before, you will know they are great fun, informative and they bring communities together – COP26 and Climate Change is on all our minds, and we hope you will join us for a weekend of collaboration, education and innovation.

In-person tickets are limited, so move quickly to secure your place!
